The local Government officials of Lumban initiated the first “Barong Tagalog Festival” from April 29 to May 3, 1996. Various embroidery products were displayed for sale at the town plaza where the festival was held. This was participated in by forty local producers. It also showcased a variety of popular locally-produced food like “Kesong Puti and Ginataang Hipon”, among others, and a few products from small cottage industries like walis, bolos, yunot, and native bags made of sundried water lily.
This activity is meant to be a continuing project of the Municipality. Lumban established itself as the “Embroidery Capital of the Philippines.”
