The area was once a haven for gold. People living in neighboring towns would visit the place in search for instant fortune. One day, a Spanish soldier patrolling the area asked a group of locals the name of the place. Because the soldier was speaking in Spanish, the locals did not understand him and though that he was asking how many gold stones they have already gathered. One of the locals answered "libo na" which means "already a thousand". The Spaniard jotted the word "Libona" in his notebook believing it was the name of the place.
