Culion
On the island of Culion, off the coast of Palawan, a group of nuns from France founded a leper colony in the early 20th century. In a few short years, 5,000 lepers were cared for on Culion, and the nuns kept such detailed records that a museum has now been founded on the same site. The actual colony closed in the 1920s, but an extensive register along with detailed photographs, clinical records and other documentation are still on display in this unique museum. Malapascua
There are few places in the world where you can see mandarinfish. And even better, in Malapascua's Lighthouse Reef, the rare and psychedelic mandarin fish are virtually guaranteed. Dusk is a time most people rarely dive. However, it is one of the best times to observe marine life because of the increased feeding and mating activity. Come and see the exotic mating dance of the male and his adoring females. At full moon witness coral spawning as well as other marine life mating. Seahorses, scribbled and banded pipefish, juvenile sweetlips, banded sea snakes, hermit crabs, and varieties of shrimp can be regularly spotted in this site. As day turns into night catch some interesting nudibranchs and a variety of cephalopods - reef squid, bobtail squid, starry night octopus, the occasional blue-ringed octopus and cuttlefish. Island Garden City of Samal
Off the coast of Samal lies two islets dubbed as Little Ligid and Big Ligid. While the islets themselves are attractive and good for picture taking, it is the surrounding water that attracts tourists. The seawater surrounding at these parts of Samal Island are popular dive spots. HOW TO GET THERE Samal is accessible by seatrip from Sasa, Davao City. Upon arriving in the island, motorcycle transport to the resort is readily available. Simply tell the driver that you want to see Ligid Island. Some locals will offer boat rides to the islets. However, this involves price haggling.
San Luis (Batangas)
Ligpo Island is located in San Luis, Batangas, Philippines. It's possible to get around this small island in one dive, but you may have to take shelter from currents. There is a cave on the east side and an undersea mount on the west side which gets deep. On the eastern side, you can expect to encounter all the usual reef fish. When there is a current, various pelagic species appear from the depths on the western side. It is a good night time dive at neap tides with lots of moray eels, catfish and squid.
