Bato is part of the class municipalities that comprises Catanduanes. The municipality of Bato is easily the smallest of the 11 municipalities in the region, as it has only a total of 48.8 square kilometers of land area.
It is believed that the town got its name from a Spanish inquiry, and when the woman assumed he was asking about the stone well, the Spaniard dutifully recorded and passed it along to his higher officials.
Bato became a fully fledged municipality in 1896.
