Jiabong is politically subdivided into 34 barangays.

Jiabong is a 5th class municipality in the province of Samar, situated at the western part of Samar Island. It lies along the coastal region of the province. The municipality is 11 kilometers away from Catbalogan, the capital town of Samar. The name Jiabong is a combination of the terms “Hiya–an” which means “a place of preparation before an attack,” and “Bong” which is actually “the sound of a canon gun."

Jiabong is a fast growing municipality and is predominantly agricultural. Being within the Maqueda Bay area, majority of its people are farmers and fishermen. The coastal water of Jiabong is known for its mussel and fish corals. It has an ideal ecosystem comprising of mangroves, corals and sea grasses situated at "Taisaw" Malobago Point.

The municipality of Jiabong, Samar is known for its green mussel, locally called “tahong.” It serves as the central trading center of mussel in Samar for shipments to Davao, Bicol, Cebu, Manila and other parts of the country. Jiabong is the biggest supplier of mussel in the region, making it the Mussel Capital of Eastern Visayas. It has also the biggest area for mussel culture, thus having the potential of becoming the mussel capital of the Philippines. The municipality of Jiabong celebrates the Tahong Festival every 17th day of May.

Aside from its thriving mussel industry, Jiabong is also home to quite a number of cave systems. The most popular of which are the Panaghoyan Cave and the Lobo Cave. Other cave systems worth exploring in Jiabong are Kaguhoan Cave, Napad-an Cave, Tinunuran Cave, Biasong Cave, the Kabituhan Caves, Tingob Caves, Naponod Caves, and the Mountain View Resort Caves.

Water formations that are found in the municipality of Jiabong are the Kamanaog Falls, Lulugayan Mini Falls, Tingob Blue Water, Naponod Natural Pool, and Maliliaw Springs.
