The municipality of Polangui was originally called "Binanuaan". It was founded by Fr. Baltazar de la Magdalena with the baptism of about twenty-five of the town's elderly citizens. The town then consisted of five hundred people. Its location was a low lying area that was prone to floods. The people later moved to the town's current location, an elevated area less exposed to flood. The town derived its current name from oyangi, a type of tree that was abundant in the area.
