Bislig is a 4th class city in Surigao del Sur. The city got its name from a legend. According to the legend, a royal couple on a hunting expedition almost died due to a rushing current in the river. Fortunately, they were able to hold on a swollen vine which saved their lives. The vine was called bislig by the locals and was abundant in the area. The ruler then named the place after the very vine that saved the royal couple as a form of thanksgiving.
Locals speak Bisaya. A local dialect called kamayo is also spoken by a few. Recently, the city has started developing a seaport to make surrounding provinces more accessible.
Bislig is politically subdivided into 24 barangays.
