Maitum is a 3rd class municipality in Sarangani Province. As of the 2000 census, the municipality has a population of 35,536 people living in 7,640 households. Majority of Maitum's population are of Ilocano origin. Living in the mountainous areas of Maitum is a tribe known as the T'boli.

The economy of Maitum is dependent on rice production. Other agricultural products include coconut, maize, sugarcane, banana, pineapple, pork, and beef. The municipality also thrives on seafood such as bangus (milkfish), shrimp, and prawn.

Maitum is politically subdivided into 19 barangays.
