Miag-ao is a 1st class municipality located in the southern part of the province of Iloilo. It is the largest municipality in the country with a total of 119 barangays. It also houses a campus of the University of the Philippines, one of the premiere universities in the country.
Commonly written as "Miagao," this municipality is roughly an hour away from Iloilo City, the capital of the province of Iloilo. It is also accessible via the Municipality of San Jose, capital town of the province of Antique through a one-hour bus ride. Miagao is a mere three (3) hours away by land from Caticlan, jump off point to the Island Paradise of Boracay, in Aklan.
It boasts of the world famous Miag-ao Church, a National Shrine built in 1786 by Spanish Augustinian missionaries. It is included in the World Heritage Site List of the UNESCO "Baroque Churches of the Philippines" since 1993. It symbolizes the rich history and culture of Miag-ao and serves as a reminder of the strong Christian foundation of the people.
