Fort Pilar - Zamboanga del Sur Attractions

Fort Pilar

Fort Pilar was a military defence fortress used by the Spaniards during the 17th century. It was intended as a defense against pirates and raiders coming from different areas in Mindanao. It also served as a shrine to Our Lady of the Pillar - the patron virgin of Spain. The Spanish colonizers eventually left the fort after surrendering the Philippines to the United States of America.

The old building still stands today serving as a historical landmark. Local rumors claim that the Virgin Mary has made miraculous appearances in the fort.
