The Magellan's Cross is a 485-year old cross which stands in a small chapel located across Cebu City Hall and along Magallanes Street.
The cross found in the chapel is made of tindalo wood, a small sign below the cross says that the original cross is encesed inside the tindalo cross to protect it from being chipped by those who believe in its supernatural and healing powers.
Some say that the cross that stands in the chapel is not the one Magellan brought with but a replacement planted by the Spaniards who came after the Spanish explorer. The original one was allegedly lost or destroyed.
The significance of this cross among the Cebuanos is evident in the use of the image of the chapel where it is located in the City Hall Seal and other Cebu-based organizations.
Within the vicinity of Magellan’s Cross are Cebu guitar vendors and shell craft and woodcraft displays. The products are popular with the locals and tourists.
